Проучване коментира неуспехите на варицелната ваксина (жива) и немалкото боледуващи ваксинирани деца. Ваксиналните неуспехи са при боледуващите, при които не е допринесла за изграждане на антитела, но и при разболелите се въпреки изградените антитела. Както и нарастващата честота и тежест на заболяването във времето при ваксинирани заради намаляващ имунитет - такъв повишен риск се наблюдава около 4-5 години след ваксинацията.
До 24% от ваксинираните с първа доза не изграждат антитела към ваксиналните антигени, а понастоящем е неизвестно оптималното време за прилагане на втора доза варицелна ваксина.
Авторите обсъждат и неясната роля на антителата в защитата срещу варицела и специфичността на ваксината.

Същевременно е пренебрегната увеличената честота на херпес зостер в следваксиналната ера, както и ваксино-свързаните сериозни нежелани реакции/заболеваемост, също и заболеваемостта при възрастни. Масовата ваксинация срещу варицела не е осигурила дългосрочна защита от болестта.

Интересен факт е, че през 80-те години е имало многобройни възражения за провеждането на клинични изпитвания на ваксината при левкемични и здрави деца и възрастни, но въпреки това са извършени и приключват през 1995 г., а ваксината не се оказва толкова ефикасна, колкото се предвижда от изпитванията (каква "изненада" ).
